How to Pair Cigars with Drinks
A great pairing can turn a good cigar into a memorable one. We've spent countless episodes of A Cigar Hustler's Podcast talking through what works — and the guiding principle is simple: match intensity, then chase complementary or contrasting flavors. A delicate Connecticut gets steamrolled by cask-strength bourbon; a full Nicaraguan puro laughs at a light beer.
The one rule that matters
Match the body of the cigar to the weight of the drink. Mild cigar → lighter, sweeter, lower-proof pour. Full-bodied cigar → bold, high-proof, or rich drink. Get that balance right and the rest is personal taste.
Cigars and whiskey / bourbon
Bourbon is the classic partner for a reason. Its vanilla, caramel, and oak sit beautifully alongside a medium-to-full cigar. Try a Nicaraguan habano with a wheated bourbon — the sweetness rounds off the pepper. For Scotch, a lightly peated Highland malt complements earthy, leathery cigars, while a heavily peated Islay is a bold contrast play for a full maduro. On the show we've come back to this pairing again and again: rich maduro + a good rye is hard to beat.
Cigars and rum
Aged rum might be the most natural cigar pairing of all — both are born in the same tropical climates. The molasses sweetness and dried-fruit notes of a sipping rum wrap around a maduro's cocoa and coffee flavors like they were made for each other. Reach for an aged sipping rum, not a mixing rum, and keep it neat.
Cigars and coffee
You don't need alcohol to pair well. Black coffee and a morning cigar is a ritual for a reason — the roasted, slightly bitter notes echo the tobacco and reset your palate between puffs. A creamy espresso with a mild Connecticut is a perfect low-key pairing to start the day.
A few things to avoid
- Overpowering mixers and heavy citrus — they bulldoze subtle cigar flavors.
- Ice-cold drinks that numb your palate right before a puff.
- Overthinking it. Start with "match the strength" and adjust from there.
Build your own pairings
The fun is in the experimenting. Keep a couple of go-to drinks around, rotate your cigars, and pay attention to what lights up. We break down specific pairings episode after episode.
